Exit from Fox River Resort, turn right onto IL-71 then go about 14 miles or so. As you enter Ottawa, IL-71 will become West Norris Drive. Turn left onto La Salle Street and a few blocks later you are in Downtown Ottawa which is also known as Ottawa’s Old Town District. You can park and easily walk around the six square blocks or so that make up the area.
Ottawa kind of evolved into a town between 1823 and 1837. In 1829 the Illinois Canal Commission laid out the towns of Chicago and Ottawa as planning got underway for the Illinois and Michigan Canal which was completed in 1848. Located at the confluence of the Fox and Illinois rivers, the city was officially incorporated the same year the railroad was extended to the area in 1853 and is the La Salle County Seat.
